In this tutorial we are going to take a look at the initial desktop environment of the Ubuntu
live CD. Now what you see on your screen is the default desk top environment for Ubuntu
Linux. This is what you will see after booting the live CD. This desktop environment is
called Gnome. It is one of the two main desktop environment available in Linux. The other
is KDE. Now you will notice several things here, most of which should be intuitive and
strait forward. In the upper left hand corner are three menus: applications, places and
system. Next to those are also three icons: one for the firefox web browser, one of the
evolution email client and the other for the Ubuntu help system. In the upper left hand
corner is an icon for the volume control and a clock as well as a button to log off. In
the lower half of the screen, lower right hand corner is the trash can and two work spaces.
All of this will be explained in more detail in future tutorials. In the bottom left hand
corner is a button to hide all windows and show the desktop similar to one that's available
in windows. On the desk top are two icons: the first is a folder called examples and the
second is an icon called install. Now this Gnome desktop that is available in Ubuntu Linux
is customizable in many many ways and that is something that will be discussed in another
tutorial. But for purposes of this brief introduction, just please take a note of theses
three main applications: places and system menus, the icons as well as the log out button.
Finally, notice that the right click menu which is often found in Windows is also found in
Linux, for example, right clicking on the examples folder gives you a right click context
menu which lots of options and things that can be done with it. Clicking out of that and
right clicking on the desktop, the context menu has changed. The context menu that is
available with the right mouse click changes depending on where the mouse is when it is
clicked. So, in summary this is the default Gnome desktop available for Ubuntu Linux. This
is currently the live CD you are looking at. It has not yet been installed on the on the
hard drive. That will be done at a later time. This concludes the tutorial. Thank you
very much.
