In this tutorial we look at the SU and password commands. But first inside, in real life you should generally never log in as root user but I do it through out this tutorial and encourage you to do the same as it saves time during the Red Hat exams. That's because with the path associated with the root user you get direct access to key administrative tools such as IF config and many of the systems dash config tools. Now the SU command it's the sign to switch accounts by itself it defaults to the root account but with out any switches it does not change your current directory and it changes your path a little bit but if you want real access to the root account run SU space dash. Let's see how that works. My current directory is my home directory. My current path is as shown. Now let's try the SU command by itself. I enter the administrative account password, I'm still in my home directory and one more directory is add to my path. Exit out of there, now we run SU space dash, I enter the administrative password, I'm now in the root user's home directory and I have the full list of directories associated with the administrative user in my path. I can use the SU command to navigate to other users' accounts. SU Katie accesses Katie's home account but I stay in my own home directory. If I run SU dash Katie I get access to Katie's home directory. Let's see how that works I run SU Katie and Katie's password, I'm still in my home directory. I run SU dash Katie and enter her password; I have access to Katie's home directory. The password command is real simple you can set your own password and the root user can set anyone's password. Let's go back to Katie's account. When she logs into her own account she can set her own password. She has her current password; she can change it to a new password but there are checks. Passwords maybe were checked and based on dictionary words, passwords can be too simple. Finally the root user can set anybodies password. As the root user let me set Donna's password. Obviously that's not working for Donna, let me change Randy's password. Thank you and on to the next movie.
