In this video we'll watch what happens while packages are actually getting
installed and how you can do some preliminary configuration at this time. In
some configurations installation takes just a few minutes, good time for a
bathroom break, in others fifteen, thirty minutes or more. If you're faced with
that kind of delay you'll want to get started as quickly as possible. There are
five terminals available during the installation process, six if you're
installing from the GUI. If you're installing in text mode press the alt key and
one of the function keys F1 through F5. If you're in GUI mode you'll need to
press the control and alt keys together with the function key of your choice.
For example if you want access to the command line press alt and F2 and we see a
command line. To return to the installation window press alt and F1, if you're
in the GUI that's control, alt and F6. Once you have a few basic packages
installed you can inspect your partitions with commands like mount and df. If
you want to access the top level root directory you can make some preliminary
configuration choices while packages are still being installed. Generally the
top level root directory is available as a mount sysimage subdirectory during
the installation process. To make that your root directory while your
configuring things run the chroot mount sysimage command. And you should
recognize these directories as the directories you see after Red Hat Enterprise
Linux is installed. While this is a great tool for the Red Hat Certified
Engineer exam as it can help you get a head start for configuring servers as
their installed, it can also help you configure things during the RHCT exam. You
have access to all these configuration files of the ETC directory and you can
configure these files as they get installed. Now let's return to the regular
installation command line with the exit command. We've reviewed the command line
terminal, now let's check the installation log that's associated with the third
virtual terminal. I access the third virtual by pressing alt and F3. Yeah I'm
installing from the cd but that's a necessary evil for this particular video.
You can see some of the commands that are run as installation proceeds. Directories
are formatted others are mounted, if there is an installation problem your
likely to see it here. If you want, to look at the full installation log it's
available in the temp subdirectory in the anaconda log file. I like to pipe that
to the less command which lets me scroll through the different messages I see
during the installation process. If you want to see system related messages look
in the fourth virtual terminal. I access that by pressing alt and F4. It's a
system boot log similar to what you see conventionally with a dmesg command or
the var log dmesg file. To review the full system log during the installation
process return to the command line in the second virtual terminal, its available
in the temp sys log directory. Let's pipe that to the less command again. You
should recognize these messages as what you see when your system boots. And
there's a fifth virtual terminal where you can review how file systems are
formatted. Naturally you can get to it by pressing alt and F5. In this
particular case there's output from the command that formats extended two file
systems. But the third line from the end uses the tune two fs command which
converts an extended two file system into the default extended three file system.
Now lets return to the original installation screen. In text mode I press alt and
F1, if your in the GUI press control, alt and F6. Installation proceeds for
another few minutes, once installation is complete click OK to continue and
you're system will reboot and you'll run Red Hat Enterprise Linux for the first
time.
