Let's talk about what the difference between a database and a spreadsheet is. You know, a spreadsheet, like Excel, essentially is a very minimal database. You know, you've got rows and columns. Well rows and columns in a spreadsheet translate to records and fields, OK? Think about that for a second, sit down and think about it. If you were going to enter information into a spreadsheet to have it go over into a database, what you'd want to do is enter everything on one record for that particular person. Let's say it is a rolodex of phone numbers, well you'd have in the first cell A1, then you'd have B1 would be the last name and then C1 would be maybe the address or phone number and so on and so on. But then on A2 and B2 and C2 and so on, that will be the next record of the next person, so if you organize them that way in a spreadsheet, that translates perfectly to a database. And if that helps you to understand things as far as, Ôcause you know, most people have experience with spreadsheets, well then think of it that way. But there are big differences between a database and a spreadsheet. Databases are designed to organize records and to file sets, in other words, I only want everybody who is in the state of California to be shown right now. Well, now I want to show all of the people in my entire database, not just the people in California. OK, now I want to sort them, that's one of the big differences. You know, a spreadsheet can do some of those things, but just not quite as well as a database. A database also allows you to put interface onto this, you know, the buttons and the graphics and things like that. You can do a little bit of that in a spreadsheet, but it's much more pronounced inside of a database, you can do much more. You can also link inside a spreadsheet, but databases are designed to be linked. They were designed from the beginning, it's a mathematical equation. So you can take different tables, such as companies and employees, two different tables tracking different records, and connect them up together, so that this company has these employees working for them. Databases also allow multiple users at the same time working on the same database, and you can go into web publishing. You can also do reporting, there's so many things, you couldn't even list them all here but suffice to say, a database is kind of like a spreadsheet on steroids.
