In this movie we will have a look at the minimum requirements needed for running
FileMaker Server and FileMaker Server Advanced. At this time there are no
published guidelines for Server 10 except for operating system limitations so
we're going to base ourselves on best practices and experience. FileMaker
traditionally has made the distinction between low-end and high-end deployments
with 50 users being the cutoff. The main difference between the two types of
deployments being the operating systems and memory requirements. As bigger
deployments with hundreds of users now becoming possible, a different set of
requirements will no doubt be developed in the near future. We will talk more
about these requirements in the best practices videos. When it comes to memory,
everyone will agree that the minimum stated here is really on the low side. The
footprint on the hard disk of the FileMaker Server installer itself is minimal
and likely not very relevant on any machine. But be careful with the log files
and backups as these can eat up a lot of that hard disk space. We'll talk about
backup strategies for both the files and logs to make this more manageable. When
you want to use the web publishing in FileMaker Server, you will also require a
web server. Now, that web server can be on the same machine as the FileMaker
Server but it doesn't need to be. The web server needs to have IIS configured on
Windows and Apache on OS X. The main differences between Server 10 and the
previous version are in the operating system requirements. As you can see,
Windows XP is not a supported platform any more. It has been replaced by Vista.
Server 2000 has also been dropped and the brand-new Server 2008 platform has been
added. Similarly on OS X, support for 10.3 has given way to support for 10.5.
FileMaker Server relies heavily on the Java runtime environment. For OS X Version
5 of that, Java runtime environment is required and for Windows the same
version, although Version 6 is recommended. On Windows as part of the FileMaker
Server installation, Apple Bonjour is installed as well. The minimum version
here is 10.0.5. So what happens if you try and install and run FileMaker Server
on a machine that does not meet these requirements? Well, it may not install at
all. The installation may or may not fail but even if you do get it installed,
there could be issues with how FileMaker Server functions. Some of the reported
problems are not being able to launch the service, not being able to stop it and
problems with backups and a whole slew of other issues. The requirements as
listed here are really the bare minimum. I would venture to say that a good
deployment needs more than this.
