The installation will look pretty much the same on Windows as on Mac, so we'll just
go ahead and install it here on this Mac. One of the first big decisions that
you'll need to make is whether to deploy FileMaker Server on one or on multiple
machines. Multiple machines can be used to spread the load between the database
server and the web publishing engine. If you're not going to use web publishing
or if you're just installing FileMaker Server for testing, then the single
machine installation is your choice. I wan to stress this. It's only when you
expect a heavy load through web publishing that you gain any performance benefit
from using more than one machine. If you choose multiple machines, you need to
let the installer know what the role is for this particular machine. Master
machine is the machine that has the database engine. A worker machine has either
the web publishing engine in a three machine configuration or a web publishing
engine and the web server module in a two machine setup. We'll just go ahead and
do the single machine installation. And after we input our license information,
the bits and pieces of FileMaker Server are getting installed. When everything
is installed, you'll be asked if you want to start the deployment wizard. This
is where the different parts of FileMaker Server get enabled, like ODBC and JDBC
support and web publishing. So let's go ahead and do that. The first thing that
we need to do is set up an admin user account and password. That's the account
and password that will need to be used whenever someone wants to open the
FileMaker Server Admin Console. Next comes the screen asking you some optional
information about the FileMaker Server installation. And after that you can
enable ODBC and JDBC but only if you have a FileMaker Server Advanced
installation key. The next question is about enabling web publishing and that
one is there for both regular FileMaker Server and FileMaker Server Advanced
except that for Server Advanced you can also enable instant web publishing. Note
the question about PHP. If you want to use PHP, you can let FileMaker install
the supported version, which is 5.2.6 and use that. If you do it will disable
any other running version of PHP on that machine. If you'd rather use your own
pre-installed PHP engine, then you will have to manually install some FileMaker
components for PHP. More about that in a movie dedicated to PHP. Now, this is
where the installer will try and talk to our installed web server, Apache in
this case. With all this information set, FileMaker Server finishes the
installation process. And there we go. Next comes the work of properly
configuring and tweaking all the FileMaker Server settings to meet your
requirements. This can be done with the Admin Console from any workstation and
we have separate movies for each of those preferences in this tutorial. After
the installation, you will find FileMaker Server installs in the library
FileMaker Server and all of its sub-folders. We'll talk about all of those
folders in a later movie. On Windows you'll find the equivalent folders in the
Program Files section of your hard disk.
