In this movie we will look at the install process for FileMaker Server. There is a
separate movie on installing FileMaker Server Advanced, but for the most part,
the installation process is the same for both versions. The installation process
is also described in the Getting Started Admin Guides that you can find on the
FileMaker Server Install CD and you can also download those from the FileMaker
website. Before we get started, you can not install FileMaker Server on a
machine that already has another copy of FileMaker Server installed on it. That
is because FileMaker Server uses one hardwired port for its data traffic. So two
copies of FileMaker Server would generate conflicts as both would try and grab
that one port. If you're going to install FileMaker Server 10 on a machine that
already has FileMaker Server 9 or any previous version on it, then you will need
to uninstall that old version. Unfortunately, there's no backup utility to
preserve your old settings and schedules so make sure that you document the
current settings before uninstalling. And before you uninstall, make sure to run
a backup schedule and to close the files first. If you have a trial version of
FileMaker Server installed and it has not expired yet, then you can just update
the license key and the trial will revert to a full FileMaker Server. If the
trial has expired, you will need to uninstall it first. On Windows, all
FileMaker products require access to the original install files when you update
them. That means that if you install from the CD, you will need to put that CD
in the drive whenever you want to update FileMaker Server. With that in mind you
might want to copy the contents of the CD to the hard disk or to a network share
if you need to install more than one FileMaker Server and install from there.
This makes updating FileMaker Server even easier since you won't have to physically
put the install CD in the CD drive to do the update. Note that on Windows you
don't need to map the network share to a drive letter to do this. In fact, it's
probably better if you don't, otherwise you need to map that share to the same
drive letter in order to do an update. You can just locate the share in the
network neighborhood and run the installer from there. On the Mac you can update
FileMaker products without having to put the original CD in. If you want to use
web publishing, make sure that the web server is actually running before you do
the install. The FileMaker Server installation process will try and communicate
with the web server so it really needs to be running. On Windows, the FileMaker
Server installer will do a couple of checks before it actually begins installing
the FileMaker Server itself so you might see this dialog when you install
FileMaker Server on Windows. What it does, it checks to make sure that you have
the correct version of the Java runtime environment, which is Version 6, the
recommended version and it'll also check if you have Bonjour for Windows installed.
If you don't have those, FileMaker Server will install them for you. Now let's get
going with the real installation.
